At the time I wrote this work, I was obsessed with timbre, its expressive capabilities and the colors it evoked. Profondeurs de champ (depths of field) thus explores a variety of sonic combinations and instrumental techniques. Narratively, the work meanders through different depths of field. The initial sections are metaphorically akin to landscape photography, with a rugged topography, prominent elements and a sense of flow. Suddenly, everything stops, no more harmonic, melodic or rhythmic progression. We enter the world of macrophotography. Texture becomes the subject, with its infinite variations. We plunge into the sound itself, the very small details become audible, important, meaningful. Even though my following works brought me somewhere else, creatively speaking, it’s in Profondeurs de champ that I became aware of the incredible potential of timbre, and that I developed the timbral signature that characterizes my music.
